Carol to the office please !

The adventures of Carol Brown, representing Norwegian Cruise Line on a 6-month mission on the open sea to train the crew, explore new ports, seek new friends and experiences, and to boldly go where she has not gone before.

Carol’s log: Cruise Date: May 20, 2011 (At sea)

I feel as if I’m in the principal’s office and I’m in trouble. I know it is just my imagination but that is the feeling I have. Gaby, my boss on the shore side spoke with me about the handling complaints presentation I did with the bartenders. She reminded my that these types of requests should be checked with her first as they may conflict with something that is being developed shore side and that my role should be as a consultant with the manager of that area. She is right, of course, but I still felt chided like a wayward child. I’ll get over it.

My work laptop has been behaving badly since I got here. The wireless adapter doesn’t work, I keep getting dropped from MS Outlook, my mailbox is always over its limit preventing me from sending or receiving messages and the blue screen of death shows it ugly colour whenever it chooses. So finally today, the IT department can fix it. I’m excited to get it back and have it working as it should. My productivity should go through the roof. Woohoo!

I’ve been doing this Basic Safety Course for a few days now. It is very in-depth. It encompasses first aid, firefighting techniques and a life raft tipping exercise that means a dip in the swimming pool while we are in Ketchikan. This certification is serious. I only have to do a refresher every five years and once completed I will be assigned to a safety duty during drills and in the event of an actual abandon ship. I’ll tell more about these exercises as I complete them. I feel they’ll be challenging.

I did the Norwegian Way again. I got to see more of the Elements show. It is pretty cool. The two singers who start the Norwegian Way song were disappointing. They did sound as if their hearts were into it. I thought “Camara could do a better job.” Maybe I’m biased.

I’m starting to notice some interesting men onboard, or should I say they are noticing me and taking the initiative to speak with me. It is nice to have the attention of men, it has been awhile. Unfortunately, most of them have wives at home. The single ones seem happy to be single and to flirt with all the women onboard. I’m glad I didn’t come on ship to find romance but I guess I can keep my eyes and options open.

The voyage continues…
